World news in brief
Bus crash kills at least 21
At least 21 people were killed yesterday when a bus fell into a canal in Egypt’s Nile River Delta region. Three children were among the dead, according to Sherif Makeen, a health ministry official. The accident happened in Dakahlia province, around 100km (62 miles) northeast of the capital, Cairo. No details were given as to why the bus veered into the water.
Egypt has a poor road safety record with many collisions caused by speeding, bad road surfaces or poor enforcement of traffic laws. In July, a bus slammed into a parked trailer lorry on a main
road in the southern province of Minya, killing 23 people and injuring 30. Last month a truck crashed into a minibus in Dakahlia, killing at least 10 people, authorities said.

A holiday cruise ship carrying around 800 passengers who have Covid-19 docked yesterday in Sydney, Australia. Marguerite Fitzgerald, president of cruise operator Carnival Australia, said cases began to rise about halfway through the 12-day voyage. All cases were either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, and guests who tested positive were assisted by staff “with accessing private transport and accommodation to complete their isolation period”. The cruise operator added that infected patients had been isolating and every passenger had been given a rapid antigen test in the 24 hours before arrival.

It is unclear how the passenger managed to get the box cutter onto the plane. The tool was prohibited on commercial flights following the terror attacks on 11 September 2001.
