Britain’s ‘loneliest house’ returns to market

The UK’s “loneliest house” – a sombre 19th-century shooting lodge nestled in the heart of Skiddaw Forest – has returned to the market after it was put up for sale for the first time in 200 years in 2021. For sale, too, is the 3,000-acre expanse of heather-dusted moorland and three mountaintops surrounding the sequestered Lake District property, built in 1829 by the Earl of Egremont of Cockermouth Castle. The stony expanse, also

revered by romantic poets Samuel Taylor Coleridge and John Keats, was characterised by Hugh Walpole as “one of the loneliest dwelling-places in all the British Isles”.

It is currently used as a youth hostel but has served as a gamekeeper’s lodge, shooting cabin, shepherd’s dwelling, schools field centre and ramblers’ bothy. Viewing is by appointment only and its asking price is by application, although a value in the region of £10m is reported.

Adele thanks fans during first night of Las Vegas residency

The Weekends With Adele residency in Las Vegas began on Friday, with the singer telling her fans: “Thank you so much for coming back to me.” Adele’s run at Caesars Palace had originally been due to begin at Caesars Palace on 21 January, but was postponed just two hours before the first show was scheduled to begin because it was “not ready”. Adele thanked Caesars Palace for the support she had been shown following the show’s postponement, saying she was “honoured” to be performing at the venue.

“I’d really like to thank Caesars because there has been a lot of shit written about me since I cancelled my shows,” she said. “I tell you 90 per cent of it is absolutely completely made up, there’s been rumours that I’m moving hotels and I’m moving theatres and all this and never once did they ask [me] any questions.” Her show is scheduled to run until 25 March.

Elderly man airlifted to hospital after being trampled by cow

An elderly man admitted to hospital yesterday with serious injuries after being attacked and trampled by an “dangerously out-of-control” cow, police said. Dyfed-Powys Police received reports at about 10.15am yesterday that the cow had escaped from Whitland Mart in Carmarthenshire, Wales, and made its way to the centre of Whitland. The man was taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff by air ambulance. Police said the cow went onto the rail track in the area, with trains stopped to “mitigate the danger to them”, before it made its way to a field. Attempts to safely contain the animal failed and it was “humanely dispatched” with the consent of the owner, police added.
