Bafta winner Capaldi ‘wouldn’t be here without’ Forsyth

Actor Peter Capaldi spoke of how Bill Forsyth saved him from living off pakora and lager after casting him in Scottish cult classic Local Hero. The star of Doctor Who and The Thick Of It praised the Scots film director in an acceptance speech after receiving the Bafta Scotland Award for Outstanding Contribution to Film & Television last night.

Speaking to the audience while holding his Bafta, Capaldi said the award was “for getting lucky, and for being lucky enough to be born in Scotland”.

But he also pinned the recognition on the people who he met along the way, including Forsyth. He said: “Forty years ago I was just up here (in Glasgow) as an art student, living off pakora and lager for breakfast. Bill Forsyth scooped me up and put me in Local Hero. It was an act of kindness and confidence that baffled me and much of the industry to this day, but I wouldn’t be here without him and nor would a lot of others.” PA

New transatlantic airline to fly out of Northern Ireland

A new low-cost airline is set to offer transatlantic flights from Northern Ireland. The announcement by Fly Atlantic has been described as a “game changer”, filling the gap in the market between Belfast and North America.

Fly Atlantic is planning to start operating flights to Europe as well as North America from the summer of 2024. Once fully operational, the airline said it intends to fly to 35 destinations from Belfast and will create 21,000 new jobs by 2030.

Fly Atlantic’s chief executive Andrew Pyne said they chose Belfast over strong competition across the UK: “Our vision is of Belfast as a strong aviation hub linking Europe and North America. The lack of direct transatlantic air services has clearly

been an impediment to Northern Ireland’s economic and tourism development, which we now intend to remove.” PA

Walker found dead after falling from Snowdonia mountain

A man has died after plummeting 200ft (61m) from a mountain in Wales, rescuers say. The walker, in his fifties, is said to have died from his injuries after he fell from Glyder Fach in the Snowdonia national park.

Emergency services were sent to scour the area after the man failed to return to the Pen-y-Pass youth hostel where he had been staying on Wednesday. His body was found at around midday on Thursday after a search aided by the coastguard helicopter, the Ogwen Valley mountain rescue team said.

They discovered the man on a “very steep and loose path” that joins up with Bristle Ridge, one of Snowdonia’s most popular climbing destinations. “It appears that the man had fallen some distance and has probably died as a result of his injuries,” a rescuer explained.
