Emmanuel Macron is expected to reject British requests to return small boat asylum seekers to France, after his calls to establish more safe and legal routes were ignored. The French president will not publicly embarrass Rishi Sunak over the issue, but sources made clear he had not wavered in his position and it could prove a stumbling block when the leaders meet in Paris today.

The leaders are expected to discuss “forging a new relationship” and to ink a deal on missiles to bolster Nato. But Labour said the summit would be a “total failure” if no agreement was struck on migrant returns.
