Lace and luxe for evening
Elisa Cowen previews the eveningwear collections coming to a store near you for spring/summer 2013
VINTAGE glamour, a 1960s edge and a party sprit that harks back to the Jubilee and Olympics — these are the keynotes for eveningwear this season. At After Dark and After Dark Plus, in north London, Douglas Griver notes that: “Lace appliqués on tightly gathered tulle and chiffon give fabric interest, while jewel colours are often flesh-lined to soften the tone and give a young, sexy look. Cap sleeves are a favourite, but tipping-the-shoulder fichu necklines are this season’s must-have.”
At Judith of Wanstead, in Essex, “it is exceptionally colourful this summer” with materials from linen to man-made and cotton stretch, from names such as Joseph Ribkoff.
John Charles is a favourite at Mary’s of Enfield, in Hoddesdon and this summer the label is focusing on the Jackie O look, subtle pastel shades such as heather and blossom and delicate vintagey lace detail. There are also striking floral prints which have that summery, special-occasion feel.
