South crash as cup dreams fade away

- BY JAMES MASTERS

South Manchester crashed out of the Challenge Cup in the first round after suffering a 33-run defeat by Wilmslow.

The bowling heroics of 13-year-old Dan Glicher, who took 3-23, proved in vain as South were unable to chase down their victory target of 189. The signs had been good for South with Huddy Lieberman taking an early wicket as Steven Glicher’s side looked to pile the pressure on their hosts. Akiva Lieberman, Josh Oehley and Shaya Rabinowitz all chipped in before Dan Glicher stole the show on his debut for the team. The young bowler produced a devastating five-over spell to reduce Wilmslow to 188-8 off their allotted overs to give South a chance. But the visitors suffered a nightmare start following the loss of Rabinowitz, before Steven Glicher and Akiva Lieberman got the i nni ngs b a c k o n track.

The pair added 47 for the third wicket before Glicher was dismissed for 21. Akiva Lieberman soon followed, falling for 41 after hitting a huge six onto the roof of the local Leisure Centre.

Loz Newman battled to 23 as he looked to push the scoring along, but once he was sent back to the pavilion, the game was up as South slipped to a disappointing defeat. Meanwhile, Manchester Maccabi lost out to Forresters by 132 runs in the Challenge Cup quarter-finals. Chasing 184 from 40 overs for victory, Maccabi were skittled out for just 51 after finding life difficult against the Forresters bowling attack. Ahmed’s 7-13 destroyed the Maccabi batting line-up after what had been an encouraging bowling display by Maccabi. Jamie Benjamin finished with figures of 2-28, while Ray Tammam also took two wickets to limit Forresters to 183-7. But Maccabi were unable to handle the pace and power of their opponents as they slumped to a painful defeat.
