Notts ties up base

JEWISH STUDENTS in Nottingham will hold social and religious events in new premises when they return for the next academic year.

Deals struck with universities in the city have provided the thriving Jewish student population with new and bigger venues.

Nottingham JSoc had lobbied for extra funding from UJS Hillel and the Jewish community after outgrowing its small and out-dated base in the Beeston area. The lease on that property ends next month.

Weekly JSoc events will in future be held in a large room above a pub in Lenton, just 400 metres from the main Nottingham University entrance and close to where second and third year Jewish students live.

An office suite will also be hired as a JSoc operational centre, enabling committee members to hold meetings and plan projects.

Friday night dinners will be held in the university students’ union’s largest hall, Atrium, where kosher catering can be provided for up to 200 people.

The university will continue to sell kosher food in the students’ union, including daily hot deli sandwiches.

A UJS spokeswoman hoped “that with JSoc and Chaplaincy, we can continue to ensure the needs of Nottingham’s Jewish students are met and that spaces and provisions for their events are readily available”. The UJS University Fair for sixth-formers and their families takes place at Yavneh College, Borehamwood, on Sunday from 11am
