much h about b the h socialising i li i as i it was about racing. On the terrace of Government House, VIPs and celebrities mingled to drink champagne and gaze out across the sea as aristocratic guests might have done in the days when the Duke and Duchess of Windsor lived here after the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936.

In front of the house is a jaunty s statue of Christopher Columbus and other reminders of Nassau’s history are visible at Fort Charlotte, built in 1788, which has spectacular views out to Paradise Island and the harbour.

Nassau boasts other attractions too, such as the National Art Gallery and the quirky Pirates Museum. There are designer shops on Bay Street, but don’t ignore the Straw Market opposite which sells charming locally made crafts.

Dolphin Encounters at Blue Lagoon Island offers an enjoyable day out but for thrills there is the shark dive at Stuart Cove.

The proprietor’s claim to fame is that he taught Sir Sean to dive for the underwater scenes in James Bond films such as Thunderball.
