Suburb rabbi off to Cape Town

- BY SIMON ROCKER

HAMPSTEAD GARDEN Suburb Synagogue’s associate rabbi, Anthony Knopf, is leaving at the end of the month to head a congregation in South Africa.

Rabbi Knopf, 33, who joined the synagogue as community director six years ago, will become the rabbi of the Camps Bay shul in Cape Town.

HGS chairman Keith Barnett said the Manchester Grammar School and Cambridge-educated minister had “established himself as an excellent speaker and educator. He and his wife Carly have made a huge impact on the community.

“We’re delighted that he has the opportunity to run his own shul,” he added. “I am quite convinced that in a few years, he will come back and get a big community here. I regard him as one of the brightest lights for the future of Anglo-Jewry.”
