Fresher’s guide to university life

-

FRESHERS’ WEEK can be a daunting time. You have left home for the first time and are thrown together with new people from across the country. We asked five Jewish students about their hopes and fears for life on campus:

Sam Brady, from Newcastle, studying at University of Leeds: “I’m looking forward to making new friends, learning new things, discovering a new city, and being independent.

“I will definitely get involved with the JSoc. Where I come from there are not many Jews, so it will be good to meet new people and broaden my horizons.”

Rosie Collins, from London, studying at University of Nottingham: “I’ve been in Jewish education all my life so I’m excited to branch out. Also to find out about new activities and societies. And my course sounds quite fun.

“I’ve been in this bubble for so long so I don’t know what to expect. It is a whole different life.”

Rafi Cohen, from Mill Hill, studying at University College London: “I’m not really worried about antiIsrael stuff on campus. My brother has been in London for the last three years so it’s nothing too difficult.

“I want to play my part in Israel activism. I’m looking forward to a structured life.

“I’m worried about the workload combined with other commitments, and to make sure I have enough time for everything.”

Hadassa Partouche, from Pinner, studying at Birmingham City University: “I’m looking forward to meeting some new faces, to a completely new experience, a different city, and I’m looking forward to growing up.

“I’m not nervous, I just go with the flow. Everyone starting university is in the same boat.”

Leanne Kingsley, from London, studying at University of Birmingham:

“I am most looking forward to social things and being part of a Jewish community. Being with people my own age will be a lot more fun.

“I’m also looking forward to being independent and learning to look after myself. I will probably blow up the kitchen though.

“I’m nervous about cooking and buying kosher food — apparently it’s very difficult so I will have to bring some from home. I’m going to buy frozen packs of schnitzels.”
