US shul gives scholar post to woman

THE FIRST British woman to study for Orthodox ordination has been appointed scholar in residence at a United Synagogue community.

Dina Brawer, who is the UK ambassador for the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance, will be leading several Shabbat studysessi­onsatHamps­teadSynago­gue in London.

In 2014, Mrs Brawer enrolled as a long-distance student at Yeshivat Maharat in New York, the first yeshivah set up to train women as modern Orthodox spiritual leaders. Some graduates have gone on to call themselves “rabbah”. Dina Brawer: leading Shabbat study Mrs Brawer said on the shul’s website that she was “delighted that Hampstead Synagogue has invited me to teach”.

She added that she hoped the opportunit­y would allow her “to build meaningful relationsh­ips and derive

much inspiratio­n”.
