Title shoot-out is on the cards, says Rosenberg

- BY DARREN WITCOOP

FOOTBALL TONY Rosenberg believes the Accountants Premier League fixture congestion should see AFC Flixton and Manchester Maccabi 1st lock horns in a one-off title shootout.

Flixton overhauled their rivals thanks to Sunday’s 3-1 win over Miam Miam. It was the defending champions’ second game in the past 12 weeks due to a series of postponements.

The wet weather has played havoc with the schedule in the north west in recent months to leave clubs facing a race against time to fulfil their fixtures.

Teams that do not play on their own pitch will have completed their home games by the end of April.

With a large chunk of the season still remaining, Rosenberg believes league bosses should consider drastic measures to settle the championship.

A winner-takes-all game has been mooted by Flixton’s joint-manager Rosenberg. He said: “It’s become a bit of a farce due to all the cancellations. It’s not the league’s fault but they might have to come up with alternative plans rather than arranging midweek matches.

“That is not always suitable. I believe if it’s just Manchester Maccabi 1st and ourselves who can mathematically win the league in the closing stages of the season, then a one-off final might be the best outcome.”

Sam Van Gelder guided Manchester Maccabi 1st into the County Cup semifinal at the expense of Levenshulme.

Maccabi boss Tony Gellman said: “It was another hard-fought win. There is a long way to go but we are looking good on a couple of fronts.

“The Accountants Premier Division title is our priority, but a cup win to go alongside it would top off a memorable season.”
