- BYDANNYCARO

RUGBY UNION SAM KATZ has described his move to Jersey RFC as a big step forward after signing for the English Championship club.

Katz, 25, represented England Students during his last year of university two years ago before moving to Spain.

He helped SilverStorm El Salvador win the Copa Del Rey in front of the King of Spain and 26,000 fans at the Jose Zorilla Stadium earlier this year.

He said: “I’m delighted to have joined Jersey RFC. It’s a brilliant club with an amazing following and I’ll be joining a great squad.

“It’s a big step forward for me and will be a real test in a competitive league.

“My aim is to learn from the experience of those around me and take my game to the next level.”

Jersey head coach Harvey Biljon described the Team GB Maccabiah Games star as “a very capable footballer, both out-of-hand and off the kicking tee”.

He said: “Sam is someone who can make the step up to the Championship and I’m expecting him to push Brendan Cope for the starting shirt at fly-half.”

Katz, who is f rom Northwood but currently lives in Valladolid, is already setting his sights on silverware. He said: “The play-off finals are at the end of the month so we hope to win that too and do the double.

“Of course I’m going to do everything I can to compete for the number 10 shirt and help the team achieve its goals for next year. I can’t wait to get started.”

Meanwhile, Aron Radley helped Ramblin Jesters see off the challenge of the Barbados national team, Wasps, Worcester, London Irish, Harlequins, Richmond, Rosslyn Park and Loughborough to win the London Floodlit Rugby Sevens.
