Scale the heights to see shfromeveryangle

- BY ALAN SILVER First Dates.

IF HIGH dining is your thing, there are more vertiginous options than Oblix — including a few within The Shard, which houses the restaurant. But for bothfoodandpanorama,RainerBecker’s eaterie really hits the heights. On the 32nd floor, it is a few storeys higher than another of my capital favourites, Galvin at Windows, where the general manager is Fred Sirieix, who has found wider fame as the poetry-quoting and Cupid-playing maître d’ on Channel 4’s compulsive series,

But whereas Galvin’s vista takes in the sights from a Park Lane vantage point, Oblix offers a view from London Bridge, with Docklands, Tower Bridge and the Gherkin to the fore.

We are told that the best sightlines are from a table for two tucked away in a corner.

That one is taken when we arrive for Sunday brunch and, unsurprisingly, the other window tables have also been nabbed. But the waiting staff are very efficient about moving diners when one is vacated.

The weekend brunch is a good way of trying out the restaurant during daylight hours.

Although a little pricier than some Sunday lunchtime options at £62, i t includes a glass of champagne on arrival and the opportunity to sample the breadth of culinary offerings from the Oblix open kitchen. And there is a less corporate vibe at the weekend, with couples, special occasion groups and families.

Depending on age, children eat free or at a reduced rate and there are also kids’ specials.

The deal is that you can eat as much as you want from the deli counter and dessert buffet stations (do save room for the house tiramisu, chocolate confections and banana bread). Your main course is ordered.

Starting selections include vegetarian salads, gravadlax and other fish. Mains feature a wide choice of Set your sights on one of the coveted window tables at Oblix
