FOOTBALL MACCABI London Lions under-12s brought down the curtain on a successful season by lifting the Herts County Challenge Cup.
A solitary strike from Josh Nathan was enough to see off St Albans City Youth.
Jesse Tapnack, Rafi Burns and Nathan went close early on, with the midfield trio of Luc Levene, Amit Waiss and Tapnack catching the eye.
Further efforts from Zan ApplesonFidler and a ferocious Zack Miller freekick were saved.
Goalkeeper Sam Jacobs came to the rescue in the second half, tipping a penalty on to the crossbar to preserve a clean sheet.
Shraga Simons then launched a counter-attack, beating four players on a mazy run before playing in Zan Appleson-Fidler whose shot was parried into the path of Nathan. He rounded off a man-of-match performance by slotting home from six yards.
The Lions were unable to add to their tally after going down in the finals of the League Cup, which they lost on penalties, and Challenge Cup to Whetstone Wanderers.
Joint-manager Andrew Miller said: “Steve Gordon and I are lucky to have an amazing set of boys to work with. Reaching three major finals in their first competitive season and being the first Jewish team to win a youth county cup is a fantastic achievement for them and is just reward for their hard work over the season.”
