FOAM PIE FAN’S WORLD RECORD

World record broken as entertainer takes not one, but 72, pies on the chin

- BY LEE HARPIN

EVERY CHANUKAH, as he read his new Guinness Book of World Records, Dov Citron dreamed of having his name inscribed within it. But never once did the young Dov, who is better known in the community as children’s entertainer Captain Calamity, expect this to happen by having shaving foam pies flung at his face.

But that is exactly what happened on Monday, after the comedian from north-west London and his pie-throwing colleague Paul Megram set a new Guinness World Record for the most shaving foam pies thrown in one minute by a team of two.

In front of an official referee, Mr Megram, who calls himself Colonel Custard, successfully threw 72 pies at Mr Citron, an Edgware Synagogue attendee, from a distance of 1.5 metres.

“Some people will think it’s all just a bit of a silly stunt — but it’s not an easy task having 72 pies thrown at you in the space of a minute,” Mr Citron revealed. “It was a really tough record to break, and I had hundreds and hundreds of pies thrown at my face in practice as we tried to break it.

“It had been held by an American chap who basically spends his entire life breaking records like this.

“As a child I remember getting a Guinness Book of World Records every year for Chanukah and it was always the silly records that I enjoyed reading about most.”

The successful record attempt took place at the Kidtropolis children’s exhibition at London’s Excel, and the pie-throwing team celebrated wildly after being presented with an official certificate to confirm their feat.

“We were more shocked than anything at first,” said Mr Citron, who has worked at synagogue celebrations and themed events including for the Camp Simcha charity. “But now we’ve broken the record once, I’m sure we’d love another crack at doing it again.”
