Athletes sweep the medal board

ATHLETICS TEAM Maccabi GB’s athletic squad are back from the largest-ever Maccabi JCC Games in Orange County, California, with 30 individual medals — 12 gold, 11 silver and seven bronze.

In the middle-distance competitio­n, the GB team, coached by Rachel Ayrton, came out on top. In the boys and girls U15 races, they won double gold in the 800m and 1,500m.

Jack Davis-Black won his races in 2:20:90 and 4:47:70 respective­ly, while Millie Aslan won in 2:55:60 and 5:55:30. Both athletes followed-up these successes with great runs in the 3,000m. Millie won the gold in her race and Jack took silver in his.

In other notable middle-distance performanc­es. Carmel Pelmont (U15), ran three PBs and won silver medals in the 400m (77:20), 800m (3:01:10) and 1,500m (6:16:10). Noah Cohen won bronze in the boys U15 3,000m.

Maya Davis ran a PB in the girls U15 800m of 3:06:40 and picked up a well-deserved bronze .

In the sprints, Hannah Mark showed she was the “Queen of Speed” with a golden double in the U15 100m and 200m. Her recorded times were 14:40 and 31:20.

Under-17 sprinter, Josh Reeback won double bronze in the 100m (12:40) and

the 200m (26:30). He then followed this up with a brilliant run the 400m, winning the gold in a new PB of 58:70.

In the hurdles, Team Maccabi GB were represente­d by Hettie Virchis and Ella Shchimmel. Ella won a hardfought bronze medal in the U15 100m hurdles in a time of 23:40, while Hettie took a brilliant gold in the U17 300m hurdles in a time of 62:20.

She followed this up with another great performanc­e in the 100m hurdles, recording a time of 21:20 and winning the silver medal. In the field events there were more successes. Millie Aslan (U15) won double gold in

the triple jump (8.40m) and the long jump (3.76m). Josh Reeback (U17) set new PBs in the triple jump (9.93m) and the long jump (5:31) taking two silvers.

In a very close competitio­n in the U17 long jump, Hettie Virchis came out on top, winning gold, with a jump of 4.14m. In the high jump both Millie Aslan (1:14m) and Ella Shchimmel (1:07m) took silvers.

Team Maccabi GB’s only athlete in the throwing events was Hannah Mark, in the U15 shot put. She threw a new PB of 5.41m to win a silver medal.

JCC GAMES TEAM Maccabi GB have returned home from Orange County, California, after winning an impressive 72 medals at the JCC Maccabi Games.

The squad of 71 athletes and managers took part in 10 successful days of sporting competitio­n and cultural activities.

Of the medals won, some 30 came from track and field, with all members of the squad winning medals, many of which were gold.

On the football pitch, the U14 Blue team made it to the final and beat Philadelph­ia 3-1 to claim the gold. The U16 boys won a bronze after a 5-3 victory against Israel, but the U14 White team failed to reach the final, despite their valiant efforts.

Table tennis medals also came from Samuel Klein (bronze 15-16 singles) and Miles Isaacs (silver 13-14 singles), while tennis players Alon Hannuna, Rafi Howard, Joshua Imber and Oliver Davis all collected medals.

Dancers Tali Orenstein, Dani Kramer, Georgia Myers, Emma Greenberg, Talia Diamond and Jake Becker took medals in their solo and group dances, including a gold for their group Hip Hop.

In the pool, Benjamin Feigenbaum won silver in the 15-16 boys 50-yards freestyle relay. Ellie Egan-Williams, Jade Bentley, Max Winters and Rafael Leon were medalists in the 400-yards medley relay, with Egan-Williams also securing the 200-yards butterfly bronze.

As well as the medals won during the Games, a number of GB athletes were awarded Midot medals, which were given to athletes who showed leadership, positivity and embraced the “Rachmanus spirit” of fair play.

The athletes also took part in the annual JCC Cares charitable project, which this year involved interactin­g with young children in various activities.

Among the highlights of the Games are the evening and social activities, which allow the athletes to meet other young Jewish people from all over the world.

Joint heads of delegation Janice and Ian Aarons said: “The JCC Maccabi Games allow young Jewish athletes their first opportunit­y of representi­ng their country at an internatio­nal sports event. Team Maccabi GB have not only represente­d their country, but their community too, and made lifelong friendship­s. They returned home with medals and also enhanced their Jewish identity.”

The Games are held annually for those between the ages of 13 and 16. Next year they will be staged in Detroit, Michigan.
