It’s all to play for as footballers visit
LEYTON ORIENT goalkeeper Arthur Janata and midfielder Craig Clay maintained an annual tradition with a visit to Jewish Care’s Vi and John Rubens home in Redbridge
The representatives from the Vanarama National League pacesetters played table football with Harry Buitekant, 98, Harold Gordon, 90 and Howard Wayland, 67.
Mr Buitekant, “a big Orient fan”, said he had not missed a game until recently. “My dad took me when I was young and I brought my son to games from when he was six. Now my grandson is a fan.”
Leyton Orient liaison officer Howard Gould said the visiting players always received a warm welcome from residents and staff. “I think next year will be our tenth anniversary so a cake might be on the cards.
“Hearing the stories from yesteryear from some of the resident O’s supporters really does confirm just how important the football club is in the community and I’m really pleased we can encourage these reminiscences.”
