Seitler strike sees Sapler’s game plan work a treat

- BY DANNY CARO

FOOTBALL THEY say the top teams, the ones that ultimately win silverware, always find a way. That’s what Hendon United did here, taking a potentially crucial three points against their closest rivals.

This result was testament to the versatility of manager Jordan Sapler’s squad, who eased seven points clear.

Hendon were forced into a lastminute reshuffle after a couple of player pull-outs on the morning of the match, while others were “really struggling with injury,” according to Sapler.

The list included Jonti Aremband (ill), Simon Peterman, who had to come off after five minutes with hamstring trouble, and Josh Harris another of the walking wounded on the bench.

Ari Nevies started in an unfamiliar right-back role, while Jonny Kay filled in at centre-back and the injury to Peterman saw the defending champions move Chaim Korman into left-back, with substitute Dovi Fehler called into action earlier than was anticipated.

Hendon executed their game plan to perfection with a first-half strike from the returning Moses Seitler all that separated the teams.

Oakwood had their moments, but goalkeeper Russ Corin preserved a clean sheet with a stunning save to preserve the win.

Sapler said: “We learned our lessons from the last game against Oakwood. We produced some really nice flowing moves against Oakwood’s high-pressing, but the first half was a very tight and even half, with Oakwood having the notable chances.

“We produced the sort of performance that meant every player today should be proud of themselves.

“We look forward to recharging our batteries during the winter break and will be ready for the run-in.”
