Ex-mayor’s ‘disgusting’ comments

- BY BEN WEICH

A FORMER Labour mayor, Robin Turner, has been accused of antisemitism after he shared a Facebook post suggesting the Holocaust is given disproportionate prominence in schools.

The post included a caption which read: “Hitler killed six million Jews and these other two serial killers killed 70 million Africans combined but your school education system only tells you about Anne Frank and the six million Zionists that were killed by Hitler.”

Mr Turner, who served as a Labour councillor in Derby for 29 years, including a year-long stint as mayor, wrote below the post that the graphic “makes a pertinent point for the UK and Belgium. But not all the six million Jews killed were Zionists.”

Jennifer Gerber, the director of Labour Friends of Israel, told PoliticsHome: “Such disgusting comments would once have been unthinkable from a Labour party member. They are now all too common in Corbyn’s party.”

The JC has approached Mr Turner for comment.

Meanwhile, a Scottish Labour councillor in Fife, Mary Bain Lockhart, has been reinstated into the party after she was suspended for suggesting on Facebook that last July’s joint front page by the JC, Jewish News, and the Jewish Telegraph condemning antisemitism was a Mossad bid to discredit Jeremy Corbyn.
