Doubling up in the East

CATERING FOR demand, Mill Hill East Jewish Community is now offering a weekly, rather than fortnightly, Shabbat morning service.

MHE — which became a full United Synagogue congregation last April — has more than 100 members from across the age spectrum.

Established as a result of the US’s Communities of Potential project, its fortnightly services at the Canada Villa centre have attracted attendances of between 70 and 100. MHE leaders hope numbers will be maintained on a weekly basis.

Rabbinic couple Bentzi and Michal Mann, who joined MHE in October, have been a driving force for growth, along with a range of educational, social, family and interfaith events.

“We have come so far as a community,” said co-founder Avi Gillis.

“It’s incredible to think we are going weekly after starting from nothing two years ago. We must thank Canada Villa, run by Barnet Council, which has partnered with us to ensure we can have weekly services for our community, as well as all the community members who host our Friday night services.”

Expressing gratitude for the support of the US, fellow founder Josh Kleiman pledged to continue working towards the goal of “building a dynamic, vibrant and inclusive Jewish community”.
