Project leader Nigel Gilmore in the renovated synagogue
THE MANCHESTER Great New and Central Synagogue (Stenecourt) has been rededicated by Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis following a major renovation and extension.
The project, designed by local architects Atelier MB, involved installing new pews, stained glass windows, lighting, heating and ventilation. The renovation also incorporated a new entrance made of Jerusalem stone and a functions hall.
The project was led for the 400-plus member shul by former vice-president Nigel Gilmore.
He said the congregation had come to the conclusion that “the premises and main sanctuary of the campus were not fit for purpose” for the long-term.
“Monies were realised from derelict land owned by the shul, which gave both the necessary funds for the redevelopment and created a balance for the future needs of the membership.
“Stenecourt now has a dynamic campus, which includes an additional multi-functional room capable of seating 120 people for events, as well as a bright, modern, comfortable sanctuary.”
