SEE A GP AT THE ROYAL FREE

The Royal Free London private patients unit has opened a private GP service, in partnership with EdgCARE private community family doctors.

Patients of the service have direct access to the world-class consultants who practise in the Royal Free private patients unit and can be referred for specialist consultations, investigative procedures and tests, plus a wide range of treatments.

The unit’s GPs will also be able to assist with practical matters such as sick leave and sick notes for an employer, routine health checks and screenings.

Research continues on the effectiveness of curcumin (turmeric), an anti-inflammatory which is also considered to be anti-carcinogenic. Good results have recently been achieved with curcumin in alleviating the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. And it is hoped the spice might also be helpful in defending our cognitive function from dementia.

One of the problems with curcumin, however, is ensuring it is absorbed by the body. A curry or turmeric latte might be a good option, as cooking the ingredient or consuming it in hot milk is thought to make its active ingredients more accessible to the body. If you prefer to take a food supplement, BCM-95 or Longvida formulations are said to be more easily absorbed. GLASGOW GIFT

Pears Foundation has donated £5 million to the University of Glasgow, for a new building to house its Institute of Health and Wellbeing, which will help researchers tackle health inequalities. “It is a privilege to name this fantastic building after our mother [Clarice Pears], who was immensely proud of her Scottish roots,” says SirTrevor Pears. CUSHIONS FOR COLIC

Invented by Kerry Nevins, the Babocush is a cushion that soothes newborns by recreating the atmosphere in the womb with a heartbeat sound and gentle vibration. This is especially helpful for babies who need to be constantly held and those with reflux, colic and wind. Find out more at babocush.com

TOOTH UN-FAIRY?

The Tooth Fairy’s going rate varies wildly around the UK, reports a survey by stemprotect.co.uk, a stem cell and tooth storage bank. The Bradford fairy leaves an average of 50p, while Manchester’s pays £1.20. In London, children receive £1.50 but Harrogate wins at £2.50. In isolated instances, though, the Tooth Fairy splashes the cash. One Leeds respondent had woken to a £20 note. LEARN ABOUT LIVER RISK

By 2035, it is projected that liver cancer cases will have more than doubled in the UK. The British Liver Trust is urging the public and healthcare professionals to learn more about liver cancer risk factors and symptoms. Each day, 16 people are diagnosed with liver cancer and most cases are linked to hepatitis infections, alcohol and obesity. Co-factors such as diabetes and smoking further increase the risk.
