Blackman returns to Tel Aviv

- BY SIMON GRIVER

FOOTBALL Nick Blackman has signed a two-year contract with Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv after being released by Derby County.

The 29-year-old striker will hope to recapture the form he enjoyed when on loan to Maccabi from Derby in 2017/18, when he scored 12 goals. He endured a dismal season last year on loan in Spain’s second division with Sporting Gijon, when, plagued by injury, he scored twice in 11 appearances.

Blackman said: “It’s a great honour for me to return to Maccabi and wear the club’s famous shirt once again. I’m very excited about the new season and what we will be able to achieve together. I can’t wait for my first appearance in front of our fans.”

Maccabi CEO Ben Mansford said: “Nick showed everyone what he was capable of during the 2017/18 season and therefore needs no real introduction.

“He came to meet manager Vladimir Ivic in Holland last week and it was clear he was excited to become part of a Championship-winning group and to play his part in pushing forward this season.”

Born in Salford, Blackman, the son of a West Indian father and Jewish mother, took out Israeli citizenship in 2018 and hopes to play for the Israel national team. He studied at King David school in Manchester and has also played for Blackburn, Sheffield United and

Reading.
