Sacks Morasha shows Etgar the way to rap

- BY JC REPORTER

A TEAM FROM Sacks Morasha in North Finchley has won this year’s Etgar Challenge rap competition turning Herzl’s address to the First Zionist Congress into verse.

Sacks Morasha C were not only top rappers but were runners-up in the two other creative challenges as well as the main quiz last week.

Given there were 100 teams from 31 schools competing, organisers said the team’s achievement was outstanding and had never happened before.

Adam Taub, Etgar co-founder, said the rap “displayed a breadth of historical knowledge, written with wit and precision. It made all of the judges smile. It showed the fun one can have with knowledge, which is exactly what Etgar is about.”

In the other creative tests, the teams had to write a letter from Moses to his adoptive Egyptian mother and to design a graphic map of Israel.

Justin Kett, Sacks Morasha’s head of Jewish studies, said Etgar had given “a focus for the curriculum geared to preparing the children for a Jewish life beyond our school. It provides an excellent summary of key Jewish knowledge to call on in the future.”

The opening verses of the rap go: “Yo, yo, yo! / I have a vision!/The Jews should have a state,/Let’s make that our mission.

“2000 years/Is way too long ago!/ Jews should live in Israel/Without misery and woe.”
