Manchester school ‘outstanding’
BROUGHTON JEWISH Cassel Fox Primary has been judged “outstanding” in all areas of Jewish studies by Pikuach, the Board of Deputies-run inspection service.
A rich, innovative curriculum resulted in outstanding achievement, reflecting the high expectations of staff, led “exceptionally” by principal and headteacher Rabbi Yehuda Pearlman.
The three-form entry academy, rated good by Pikuach five years ago, devotes around 40 per cent of its timetable to Jewish studies. Boys and girls are separated for some Jewish topics. Many of the pupils are drawn from North Manchester’s observant Orthodox population.
Testing a range of pupils from years two to six, inspectors were impressed with the skills and knowledge attained in Hebrew reading, Chumash, Rashi, Gemara and general Jewish knowledge. “Pupils have outstanding knowledge of Hebrew reading, grammar and translation skills and know how to apply them,” Pikuach reported.
Information and communication technology was used effectively in Jewish studies — alongside their Chumash text, some pupils did research on their iPads.
Integration between Jewish studies and the national curriculum ensured “pupils view each area of learning with equal importance”.
Inspectors enjoyed “the pleasant and calm atmosphere in the dinner hall with pupils demonstrating good manners as they ate their lunch and spoke respectfully to their peers”.
They also noted the school’s concern for well-being, with a “wonderful quiet area” set aside for pupils who needed time out.
Although most parents were happy, some were less satisfied, perceiving a lack of communication between them and the school.
The school is the fourth to achieve an outstanding rating from Pikuach this year, with the other two inspected rated good.
