Hyman rewarded for champion shift

- BY JC REPORTER

CRICKET Terry Hyman has received a special lifetime achievement award from Middlesex CCC for services to recreational cricket.

Hyman joined London Maccabi Vale (LMVCC ) in 1969 and has enjoyed a distinguished playing career, taking more than 1,100 wickets, and on two occasions claiming nine wickets in an innings. He also holds the club record of 68 wickets in one season. By his own admission, he is a lower-order batsman but has been known to score valuable runs in a crisis.

Hyman’s playing career cannot, however, be viewed in isolation from his total dedication and contribution to LMVCC in its past and present form. Indeed, LMVCC chairman Alex Haffner believes “there is no more fitting recipient of the accolade for outstanding services to cricket than Hyman”. Since his first involvement in the club, Hyman has served as chairman for two periods totalling 11 years, the treasurer, a position he still holds nearly 50 years later, and, at various times, the team secretary and fixture secretary.

It is not just the fact Hyman has held and continues to hold these important posts that indicate his dedication to the cause, but equally importantly the way he has carried them out and made sure the club can go from strength to strength. His input is too significant to do justice in this application, but by way of summary, he has provided the majority of funding for the club’s outdoor nets which have been vital in renewing LMVCC’s playing facilities. He is the biggest fundraiser, supporting the club’s activities, including the thriving colts section and he has always done more than his fair share of scoring and umpiring. His dedication to the cause is further demonstrated by his remaining a regular and loyal supporter on Sundays.

Put simply, London Maccabi Vale, its two adult teams and everexpanding colts section, would not exist in its present form without Hyman. He has always been anxious also to ensure that the club’s identity as the leading Jewish club in the country is recognised in the wider cricketing community.

Hyman is also a founder member of the Middlesex Sunday Cricket League. Under his leadership, the league flourished to three divisions with each division comprising of six teams. He chaired the league for eight years and has also held other positions of secretary and treasurer, when there was no-one volunteering. Hyman is also a patron of the league.

Haffner said: “I’m delighted Terry’s unparalleled contribution to LMVCC and recreational cricket more generally has been recognised by Middlesex CCC.

“Clubs like ours are dependent on volunteers. Terry is an example to all, as exemplified by his willingness to take on any manner of roles, support at all of our matches and the various roles he has fulfilled outside of the club and, in particular, that we are well represented at all levels of the cricket pyramid.”
