GOLF The Association of Jewish Golf Clubs and Societies programme of events is in full swing.

The Southern Provincial was hosted by Abridge Golf & Country Club towards the end of July. The competition is open to Clubs and Societies in southern England, with each team comprising eight male players of varying handicap categories and is played in Stapleford format.

The competition’s recent introduction into the fixture list has proved popular as the entry criteria ensures a mixture of low, medium and high handicap players, thus allowing a broader spectrum of players to represent their club or society in a competitive environment.

Jarrod Cohen of Hartsbourne produced the best performance of the day, returning an excellent score of 43 points. He beat Paul Engelberg of NWLJGS to the prize for the best individual score.

The team competition is determined by the aggregate of the best six scores and while NWLJGS returned 196, in a close result they were beaten by Hartsbourne’s 198. NWLJGS took home the Abridge Trophy and Hartsbourne’s efforts were rewarded with the Hartsbourne Trophy

A week later, Shirley Golf Club hosted the Provincial, the version of the event for Clubs and Societies north of and including Birmingham. This event has been an integral part of the calendar for many years and again is played in Stapleford format

Local knowledge gave the home competitors an advantage, with Shirley receiving the Gerald Tankel trophy for the team event and Richard Gold taking home the Marshall Bellow trophy for the best individual return. Edmondstown were runners-up in the team event, winning the Joe Dwek Trophy with team member Michael White receiving the Martin Caller Trophy as runnerup in the singles.
