Jacobson ready to up the ante

- BY DANNY CARO

FOOTBALL Joe Jacobson helped Wycombe Wanderers make a winning, 2-0 start to the League One season against a depleted Bolton Wanderers side. The match was in doubt until the last minute after Bolton convinced the league of their financial viability following a period of uncertainty, with a takeover expected in the coming weeks.

Jacobson, 32, said it was a case of going to the unknown against Bolton, with the result all-important.

“Normally we do a lot of analysis and video preparation,” said Jacobson, “but we literally had one video to watch.

“We didn’t know a lot of their players and there was only three or four senior ones on the list. But I knew they had a lot of talented youngsters so it was a case of sticking to our game-plan.

“It wasn’t the toughest test in the end and we overran them a bit. It was nice to get 90 minutes under my belt for the first time since the end of last season.”

Jacobson, who got married in June, believes he has a point to prove. “I didn’t

play regularly towards the end of last season, so I was determined to be fighting fit going into the first match.

“Pre-season wasn’t as brutal as in years gone by. Most of the boys came back pretty fit and the general fitness levels across the squad were good.”

Wycombe have been boosted by some financial investment from American businessmen and “have made some signings that have made the squad as strong as I can remember”.

Jacobson said: “We’re excited for the season ahead and will see what we can achieve.

“Last season was about survival and we want to improve on our points tally and finish higher up the table.”
