Bernie Sanders suffers heart attack scare
BERNIE SANDERS cancelled presidential campaign appearances and was rushed into surgery last week after experiencing chest discomfort during a rally in Las Vegas.
The 78-year-old’s team confirmed he had suffered a heart attack and that two stents were inserted to open up a blocked artery in his heart.
He had been due to attend a gun policy forum in Nevada on Wednesday and was then scheduled to make several appearances in California over the following days.
But he returned home last weekend after being released from hospital, promising to return to work after “a short time off”.
A spokesman said: “Two stents were successfully inserted… He will be resting up over the next few days. We are cancelling his events and appearances until further notice, and we will continue to provide appropriate updates.”
On Monday his campaign released his plan to overhaul rules on money in US elections in an effort to end the influence of corporate sponsorship, although Mr Sanders did not make the announcement personally.
The Vermont senator currently trails Elizabeth Warren and Joe Biden in the polls for the Democratic party nomination for the presidency.
But his campaign continues to perform strongly from a fundraising perspective, raising $25.3 million (£20.6 million) in mostly small donations in the third quarter of this year, outstripping all of his other rivals in the 2020 race.
Mrs Warren tweeted: “Bruce, Team Warren, and I are sending all our best wishes for a speedy recovery to Bernie Sanders. I hope to see my friend back on the campaign trail very soon.”
Other campaign rivals, including Kamala Harris and Cory Booker, also sent well wishes.
