Good displays up on the Hill

V There were some notable results from Jewish competitor­s at this month’s London Youth Games cross country championsh­ips at Parliament Hill.

Shaftesbur­y Harriers’ Sam Greenstein finished third in the U15 3K race in 10:36, while Jack Davis-Black of London Heathside was 11th in 11:13. Maayan Radus was also third in her U17 event, held over the same distance, in 11:57.

In the U13 2K competitio­ns, Barnet & District athlete Pinni Bayvel-Zayats’s time of 8:14 placed him 26th out of some 250 runners, with Dina Silverman 43rd in the girls’ race in 8:58.

The British Athletics Cross Challenge at Sefton Park, Liverpool saw U20s Tomer Tarragano and David Stone complete the 6.7k course within four seconds of each other, Tarragano ninth in 21:52 and Stone 12th in 21:56. Hannah Viner was 21st with 29:54 in the senior women’s 8.1k race.

VFENCING OLIVER Strange, the UK’s No 1-ranked fencer for men’s cadet foil, has enjoyed great success in the Youth Five Nations competitio­n in Dublin where, despite being the youngest member of the team at the age of 16, he won silver in the men’s individual foil event.

Finishing as the highest-placed England individual foilist, Strange then went on to help his team claim the gold in the men’s foil team event to ensure an overall victory for his country.

Strange, from Barnet, a pupil at Aldenham School, Elstree, gained his top UK ranking recently with his performanc­e at an internatio­nal tournament in Budapest, where he finished in seventh place out of 285 competitor­s.

Not long before, Strange had won won three golds, a silver and a bronze for Team GB at the Maccabi European Games.

He is sponsored, along with many aspiring youngsters, by the non-profit charitable enterprise GLL, who provide them with free gym use and also a contributi­on to their physio costs.

Maccabi GB joint team leader Richard Bernstein said: “After Oliver’s fantastic summer, his is continuing with his fine form this season.”
