Jews embrace ‘fresh opportunity’ for Churchill”
Mr Churchill’s Opportunity
The reconstruction of the Cabinet is interesting on its personal side. It transfers Mr Herbert Samuel to the General Post Office, whither, it will be remembered, another distinguished coreligionist (Sir Matthew Nathan) has preceded him. It has also taken Mr. Churchill to the Home Office, where that brilliant young politician will have fresh opportunity for the exercise of his great gifts. Our own community, however, will have a special interest in Mr. Churchill’s promotion. As Home Secretary he will have charge of the administration of the Aliens Act; and after the prominent part he took in the opposition to that species of legislation, and his sympathetic replies to Jewish deputations, we may at least expect a more generous attitude towards Jewish representation on this subject than was manifested by his predecessor.
The Jewish race and the United States Government
Two questions regarding the Jewish race in its relation to the machinery of the various departments of the Government, have recently come up. At the hearing before the Immigration Commission, referred to above, both Judge Mack and Mr. Wolf — especially the latter — asked that “Hebrew” be eliminated from the list of races, under which all incoming aliens were classified. They declared that the Jews were not a race but merely a religious community. This declaration has caused quite a deal of comment pro and con.
Intellectual superiority of the Jews
“The Germans must absorb the Jew in Germany, otherwise the Jews will dominate the country,” declares a leading medical authority, Dr George Lomer, in a book on the racial question, which will be published in a few days. There is a Jewish question in Germany, says the author. The law makes all equal, but inequalities exist, and the Jews are gradually abolishing them by the sheer weight of their growing influence, so that ultimately they will control the destinies of this great empire. Dr. Lomer begins by elaborating the superiority of the Jew in all professions in which brain power tells.
