A useful purpose
was dismayed to read David Green’s letter (12 February) in response to a number of Norwood Ravenswood charity shops facing closure.
Not only do charity shops give a place for people with limited income to buy clothing and other items, they also provide volunteer jobs for the retired and people with disabilities - offering them the opportunity to contribute to society.
Having a job to go to gives people a lifeline, a sense of purpose and a reason to get up in the morning.
Finally, a good old rummage in a charity shop can unearth vintage treasures for the younger generation.
