Sects, swastikas and a roast chicken rumpus

- BY KEREN DAVID

Sect’s charge

l The Jewish anti-Zionist speaker at the British Anti-Zionist Organisation meeting in London this week was visibly shocked by statements made by members of the ultraOrthodox Neturei Karta sect. At the meeting, the theme of which was “Nazi-Zionist collaboration” during the Second World War, four members of the Neturei Karta, based in Stamford Hill, told the audience that “the majority of Jews in Europe before the war were religious. The Zionists thought it worthwhile to have the majority of these people murdered in the gas chambers in order to prevent them founding the State of Israel.” An Australian, Albeit Langer, representing an organisation known as KAZA — Jews against Zionism and antisemitism — said: “The Zionists’ attitudes were so callous that one can believe almost anything of them, but I am not convinced that they were actively trying to make sure that Jews were not around.”

Swastika ban

l The managing director of “Exchange and Mart,” Mr Len Hunnings, has promised that the weekly will in future reject advertisements containing illustrations of swastikas. Replying to a complaint from the Board of Deputies, Mr Hunnings wrote that, while it was not “Exchange and Mart*’ policy to indulge in moral judgements, content of advertisements “likely to cause upset or offence to readers’* was an exception. “It is clear that illustrations showing swastikas have caused some offence and attracted a disproportionate amount of attention. In consequence, we will endeavour to reject future advertisements of a similar nature” he wrote.

Kashrut on ‘two tiers’ banned

l A strong protest against “certain organisations who. are creating two tier kashrut** was made by Mr J. Livingstone, when he presided at the annual meeting of the Glasgow Board of Shechita. Mr Levingstone claimed that at a recent Lubavitch function, poultry killed in Manchester was served at the top table while guests at the other tables were served with chicken killed in Glasgow. That was “a slight to the Glasgow board and their shochetim” and steps had been taken to stop those practices.
