EHRS celebrate Maccabi Masters return with first win of the season

- BY ANDREW SHERWOOD

THE MACCABI Masters Football League made a welcome return on Sunday morning and EHRS celebrated it by beating Marshside to claim their first league win of the season.

Marshside took a second half lead through a freak goal from John Cohen after an EHRS goalkick hit the Marshside man and ricocheted in. However, it was all downhill for Glenthorne after that. Dan Hodes’ hat-trick along with strikes from Andy Bloom and Steve Krieger seeing them to a 5-1 win.

Elsewhere, Hendon Harriers and St John’s Wood Tigers played out a ding-dong battle that saw the sides share the points in a 3-3 thriller.

Richard Morris gave Harriers the lead, but goals from Jason Bentley and John Perloff put the Tigers in front. Nick Roman drew the sides level from the penalty spot, and although Hendon thought they had done enough to take all three points when Andy Diamond scored to put them back ahead, Ilan Cohen snatched a late equaliser to ensure that the points were shared, leaving both sides on eight points in mid-table.

There was an inauspicious restart to the Manchester Jewish Soccer League as Maccabi 3rd vs Haroldeans was called off due to a snowstorm. In the other game that was played, Jasper Van Veen’s penalty was enough to see Broughton Park Rangers beat Reich Masters 1-0 and send them joint-top of the Joan Collins Premier Division.

Snow wasn’t an issue for the kids as the Maccabi GB Junior Football League also resumed on Sunday. Eight games were played across the U9 and U10 age groups, with the U7 and U8s looking to get going again in a couple of weeks’ time.
