Creamy halva is the taste of Israel in a box and a fantastic gift’

HILE YOU’RE doing your online Yomtov shopping at Sabeny, why not pick up some extra treats for all the family? As well as prettily packed dried fruits from Walnut Tree (see page 18), you’ll find fresh and creamy halva from Sesame Kingdom — it’s the taste of Israel in a box and makes a fantastic gift to take to a dinner party. The pistachio flavour is a Sabeny favourite and there are four other types to choose from, too.

For someone who has everything, Sabeny’s Star of David socks are bound to be appreciated (see page 19).

Team them with the “I’m Shvitzing” face mask, also sold at Sabeny. Who would have thought that the face mask would become one of 2021’s must-have accessories?

Meanwhile, even though our travel plans remain modest for now, Sabeny’s travel Shabbat candleholders will make candle lighting easier when not at home.

Something for the kids now — alefbet magnets, to help make learning the Hebrew language easier. They’re the perfect complement to a set of English language magnets. Keep them on your fridge door to spell out family messages or idly re-arrange when you’re at a loose end! (Young children should be supervised at all times when magnets are in reach.) Find all the above at Sabeny.com. Kar-Ben has some fun new picture books for Rosh Hashanah, available

from many Judaica shops as well as book retailers. Rosh Hashanah with Uncle Max, by Varda Livney, tells of the visit of jokey Uncle Max, who even tries to dip his glasses in the honey. The joy of the world’s birthday radiates from these pages.

Something New for Rosh Hashanah by Jane Yolen, illustrated by Christine Battuz, is a lovely rhythmical read, which will certainly strike a chord with kids. Becca refuses to try any new foods — until a surprising pivotal moment.

Happy Roo Year! (the title alone makes you smile) by Jessica Hickman and illustrator Ellissambura is a bright and bouncy kangaroo-filled introduction to the festival.
