More to this meeting
There were important issues raised in our conversation with Nicola Sturgeon which were not included in your report (Sturgeon: We will tackle Antisemitism, 20 August).
The meeting was requested by the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council through the Scottish Council of Jewish Communities, following recent antisemitic incidents and antiIsrael graffiti at a local school attended by many Jewish and Muslim pupils. These actions, which were clearly designed to be provocative and hurtful, caused distress to Jewish parents, children and the wider Jewish community in Glasgow.
Furthermore, this school has both Jewish and Muslim pupils who had previously been educated at Calderwood Lodge Jewish Primary School, which is situated nearby, and they had become close friends. We know of two such friendships between Jewish and Muslim female pupils which have recently been terminated by the Muslim pupils for reasons related to the recent conflict in the Middle-East.
As a result of these incidents the Glasgow Jewish Representative Council has formed a joint working group with the local Muslim community, including a leading Imam and the senior Rabbi in Scotland, Rabbi Rubin. The Rabbi and the Imam will jointly be going into this school and many others in the Glasgow area to promote a message of intercommunity harmony and friendship that we hope will withstand periodic tensions in the Middle East.
