Chai’s Rosh Hashanah gift sale raises more than £30,000

-

ON SEPTEMBER 1, Chai’s flagship centre in Hendon was buzzing as loyal supporters came to shop, with more than 30 vendors offering an eclectic mix of homeware, Judaica, jewellery, clothes, flowers and millinery.

In addition, back by popular demand, the artisan market tempted shoppers with indulgent food and drink stalls including a gin bar, freshly cured smoked salmon, chocolates and, of course, Tony Page’s delicious honey cakes.

To keep shoppers fuelled throughout the day, Oh Brown Bear’s iced coffee and cookie van; Crepes & Shakes London by One Ashbourne and Ben Tenenblat’s Crave trailer were on hand, serving gourmet street food, snacks and refreshments.

In the afternoon, powerhouse husband and wife team, Sarit Packer and Itamar Srulovich of Honey & Co, hosted an exclusive live cooking session.

The gift sale also saw the launch of a chocolate cookbook in aid of Chai. Babka, Boulou & Blintzes – Jewish Chocolate Recipes from Around the World. The book is packed with a tantalising range of sweet and savoury recipes for every occasion, from sourdough rye brownies and chocolate and roasted beet icecream to Sicilian caponata and chocolate chilli.

Event organisers Debra Zender and Julia Abrams say: “We approached the gift sale with trepidation this year — not knowing what to expect. There was a steady stream of shoppers all day, with an incredible atmosphere in the building.

“We are completely blown away by the support of our community — with the odds stacked against us we raised over £30,000. An amazing amount of money which will go a long way to help support Chai’s vital work in the community.

Chai’s chairman Louise Hager adds: “The gift sale was extra special this year as it’s the first major event back in our centre since Covid. Not only is this an important fundraising event, it’s an ideal opportunity for many to visit Chai for the first time and experience the special atmosphere that has such a positive effect on all those who benefit from our specialised services.”
