Lionsmake mealof it– Tigers feast ongoals

MACCABI MASTERS FOOTBALL League leaders Maccabi London Lions kept up their 100 per cent winning start to the season – but left it late as Paul Buxton’s 81st minute strike saw them see off Hendon Harriers 1-0.

St John’s Wood Tigers were more convincing in earning their three points as they consolidated third spot with a 7-2 win at Marshside. Despite trailing to a Trevor Tucker goal at the break, braces from Andrew Brummer and Adam Soller, together with strikes from Jason Bentley, Paul Herszaft and John Perloff saw them emphatically turn the game in their favour, before Jonny Cohen netted a late consolation for the home side. Elsewhere, Ian Sassoon’s effort and an own goal, saw EHRS Stonegrove come away from Temple Fortune with a 2-0 win.

While there were no games played in the Manchester Jewish Soccer League, there was one all-northern Peter Morrison Cup tie, which saw Leeds Maccabi beat Haroldeans 3-1. Leeds, with a full squad available, dominated the tie and although Saul Shapiro missed an early penalty, he soon made amends for it by firing in their opener.

They doubled their lead after the break through Rafi Kaye’s curling strike. Although the Merseysiders pulled a goal back to halve the deficit, midfield Adam Gilman popped up with Leeds’ third to put them through to the last 16. The Maccabi GB Junior Football League saw another full set of fixtures played across their four age groups.

League vice-chairman Jordan Sapler said: “We’re delighted as we reach the halfway point of the season, we’ve been able to consistently provide football for all players no matter the weather or circumstances. This week’s fixtures are the final set before the winter break. We’re looking forward to the cup competitions starting when we resume.”
