Masters top three keep up the pace with New Year victories

A NEW year of Maccabi Masters Football League action began in similar fashion with the top three all winning.

Leaders Maccabi London Lions made it nine victories from nine as they maintained their five-point lead at the top of the table. Two goals from Mark Kingston, plus Bradley Lazarus’ strike saw them to a 3-0 win over Glenthorne.

Maccabi London Brady are keeping pace with them but had to rely on two own goals to see them to a 2-1 win over Temple Fortune. St John’s Wood Tigers made it a hat-trick of wins for the top trio as they came from behind to win 2-1 at Hendon Harriers. Ian Sumray had fired the home side in front, but goals from David Vince and Andrew Brummer saw the Tigers claim the points.

Broughton Park Rangers claimed their second league win of the season in the Manchester Jewish Soccer League as they recorded a 6-1 win over Manchester Maccabi 3rd. After a goalless first half, BPR turned on an emphatic second-half performanc­e with Ethan Mann, Oli Gordon, man-of-the-match Zac Walshaw, Sol Moore, Jason Linz and Elliott Bennett all getting on the scoresheet.

A new-look Maccabi team, managed by Rob Tyler and consisting of many of their Under 17 team, claimed a consolatio­n effort from Louie Jacobson.

The Maccabi GB Junior Football League also resumed from its winter break on Sunday, with the League’s vicechairm­an Jordan Sapler saying: “We were delighted to welcome back our teams for a great first day of action in 2022 for the MGBJFL.

“We had a full schedule of fixtures across both venues and were fortunate to see some high-quality football being played by all teams involved.”
