▶ IT IS stellar company — even for one of Britain’s best-loved Jewish celebrities.

But as Matt Lucas joined Tom Cruise to wish Team Maccabi GB good luck at the Maccabiah Games, the comedian chose a surprisingly humble location: his bedroom.

“I’ve made my bed, I’m a good boy,” he quipped in the video message ahead of the sports tournament that started in Tel Aviv on Tuesday.

He said: “I just wanted to wish everybody, all the GB athletes and the whole team, the very best of luck in the Maccabiah Games in Israel 2022.

“I know you’re going to make us all proud.”

Top Gun: Maverick star Cruise found time in his busy schedule to film his video, saying: “I just wanted to wish the entire Great Britain team, especially the football and futsal teams, all the very best of luck at the upcoming Games.

“I know you’ll make your family and friends proud.

“And I hope you bring back some medals and have an extraordinary time. Go get ’em.”

Mr Cruise has spent a lot of time in the UK recently for the filming of various productions.

He was most recently spotted at the Wimbledon tennis tournament last week, and at the

Grand Prix last weekend. There are a host of other famous well-wishers cheering Team Maccabi GB on. Heavyweight boxing champion Tyson Fury wished the athletes luck, saying in a video which seemed to have a special message for two members of the team: “Hi, Tyson Fury here. “This is a good luck message to Jack and Ben, and all the rest of the team. Smash it, guys. Good luck and all the best. God bless you.” Gareth Southgate, manager of the England football team, said: “Just wishing everybody involved with Team GB going to the Maccabiah Games the very best of luck.

“Hope you have a brilliant experience, and hope you bring plenty of medals home. Enjoy yourselves.”

From the world of entertainment, this year’s winner of Britain’s Got Talent, want to wish you, the Maccabi Great Britain squad, the best of luck for the world games this summer.

“I know you’ve got this, I know you can do this, and do it in style. Take care, good luck.”

Former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino, Arsenal stars Rob Holding and Emile Smith Rowe, former Liverpool player and manager Graeme Souness, cricket superstar Joe Root and former Formula One world champion Damon Hill also posted video messages wishing the team good luck.

Root said in his message: “Wishing the GB Maccabi team all the best in Israel. Go out there and go win gold.” Souness chipped in with his own video message, saying: “Good luck Team GB in Israel at the Maccabiah Games.”

Maccabi GB delegation — athletes, managerial staff and spectators — will take from the Maccabiah Games experience, he says: “I’ve always said the Maccabiah Games are more than just a sporting event and to see 10,000 Jews from all corners of the world coming together is second to none and everyone will take something different from it.

“But as long as the delegation members come away with memories that will stay with them for the rest of their lives after representing Team Maccabi GB in difficult economic circumstances, and that they’ve done themselves, their families, and the

Jewish people of Great Britain proud, then I cannot ask for anymore.”

And as to what would constitute a successful Maccabiah Games for the squad, he adds: “We won 37 medals at the last Maccabiah Games, so anything around that will be a success.

“But as I’ve said, it’s not just about medals — although coming home with one of those is what dreams are made of.”
