For Succession style, try sunnies and scarf
IN TODAY’S fashion landscape, when all hemlines, all cuts, all colours and all prints are allowable all at once, we need a few highoctane finishing touches to make us look achingly cool and on point.
In S/S23, pieces such as killer sunglasses (exaggeratedly oversized), a bold belt and a statement scarf (ideally also oversized) can transform meh to amazing. Do this right and it will take a Vogue accessories editor to distinguish high-end from High Street and real from fake.
Succession’s Shiv Roy (Sarah Snook) demonstrates how highoctane extras can do the heavylifting. She contrives (thanks, obviously, to costume designer Michelle Matland) to make “timeless” but dull tailoring look impossibly cool with killer sunnies and clever styling (oh, and good hair).
Here, too, as environmental concerns push more of us towards “timeless” but essentially dull classics, it is those “killer” extras alongside clever styling learned via exposure 24/7 to fabulous fashion imagery in media, on Insta and in TV shows such as Succession that will elevate our look and sort the impossibly chic sheep from the humdrum goats.
Find high-end designer-brand sunglasses and belts (with and without logos) at sites such as Neta-Porter or Matches.
Many High Street brands including Oliver Bonas, Boden, Mango, M&S, Cos and Zara have high-concept sunnies and edgy belts.
Price apart, products may differ only in not having an envy-worthy logo, though don’t expect “amusing” sunnies at £1.50 to offer much UV protection. For lightweight scarves try Mango, Jigsaw, White Stuff and H&M.
