Soft and transferable skills take on new importance
SOFT AND transferable skills, such as the ability to communicate effectively and dealing with other people, are more in demand than ever, according to a new survey by LinkedIn. The business social network site found nine out of ten global executives on its platform agree that soft and transferable skills — also known as “human” or “interpersonal” skills — have taken on an extra importance for them, with communication placed as the number one requirement overall.
A spokesperson for LinkedIn says: “Communication, customer service and leadership continue to be business-critical skills in the age of AI, along with other emerging skills like problem-solving.
“This research showcases the importance of upskilling, reskilling and adapting to a changing world of work.”
Work Avenue, the community’s leading employment and business support organisation, has a number of courses to help recognise, develop and learn skills in these areas.
The charity’s regular transferable skills workshop helps clients to identify obvious and less obvious transferable skills and to use them to help feel more confident in the job search and at interview.
Work Avenue head of employment Yael Shainfeld says: “You should not underestimate transferable skills, which can be one of your strongest selling points when applying for a job.
“Echoing the recent findings from LinkedIn, take a look at any job advert and you will see that up to 90 per cent of the employer’s requirements relate to the candidate’s personal qualities and attributes.
“This should give encouragement and confidence to those looking to return to work or making a career change.”
Work Avenue also recently ran a series of soft skills courses specifically on elements of communication and personal management in the workplace.
Its employment and business advisers also offer free expert oneto-one advice on the topic, helping clients with their communication, teamwork and adaptability. Shainfeld adds: “Effective use of people and communication skills is a huge factor in building strong working relationships, getting on well with your team and developing a meaningful and successful career.
“So whether you are looking for a job, seeking promotion or just wanting to improve your everyday workplace life and relationships, please come to see us at Work Avenue.”
