City’s hospitals ranked among the world’s best
TWO Newcastle hospitals have been chosen as among the best in the world according to a list drawn up by celebrated US magazine Newsweek.
The Royal Victoria Infirmary was placed at 56th out of the top 100 hospitals selected from countries around the globe including the US, Canada, Europe, Asia and Australia. The Freeman Hospital was placed in the 101 to 200 group.
They were among seven UK hospitals which made the list. St Thomas’ and University College hospitals in London came in at 44 and 48 respectively.
Meanwhile Addenbrooke’s in Cambridge, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham and St Bartholomew’s in London were named in the 101 to 200 group.
Dame Jackie Daniel, chief executive of Newcastle Upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: “I am so proud to see both the Royal Victoria Infirmary and Freeman Hospital ranked – once again – in the top 200 hospitals in the world.
“This fantastic achievement is testament to the dedication and hard work of all staff across our entire organisation, including those working out in the community, and especially so during these incredibly challenging times.” The list is drawn up by Newsweek and its partner Statista, which analysed hospitals in three main categories:
■ Hospital recommendations from medical experts: An international online survey that included more than 74,000 doctors, hospital managers and health care professionals;
■ Patient experience: Surveys measuring patient satisfaction;
■ Medical key performance indicators: Patient safety, hygiene measures and quality of treatment.
There was a separate list drawn up for the best hospitals in the individual countries.
In the UK the RVI came third behind St Thomas’ and University College hospitals in London while the Freeman came sixth.
Other North East hospitals which featured included Hexham General (23), Wansbeck General, Ashington (25), Queen Elizabeth, Gateshead (43), North Tyneside General, North Shields (58) and Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington (76).
Nancy Cooper, global editor-inchief of Newsweek, said: “This is the third year that Newsweek has partnered with Statista Inc, the respected global data research firm, to reveal the World’s Best Hospitals and it may be our most important ranking yet.
“As the events of 2020 made clear, our lives and those of our loved ones may rest on the kind of health care we have access to.
“The 2,000 hospitals named in this list – which covers 25 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany and Canada – stand out for their consistent excellence, including distinguished physicians, top-notch nursing care and state-of-the-art technology.”
