Bridge tribute to tragic Jordan

- KATIE DICKINSON Reporter katie.johnson@ncjmedia.co.uk

THE Millennium Bridge lit up blue in memory of Jordan Patterson, hours after he made his final journey through his home town.

The 25-year-old’s friends and family gathered on the Quayside on Wednesday evening as the landmark was lit up to raise awareness for mental health.

The touching tribute came on the day that hundreds lined the streets of Winlaton to watch Jordan’s funeral procession make its way through the Gateshead village.

Local singer Jade Sanders performed a live cover of Eric Clapton’s Tears in Heaven, the poignant song chosen by Jordan’s mother, Sandra, as the young man’s hearse paused so loved ones could say goodbye.

Jordan was reported missing on February, prompting a huge search effort by his loved ones, supported by locals who shared photos and updates on social media.

But the search came to a tragic end when Jordan’s body was found at Blaydon Burn on February 17.

Police do not believe there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.

Karyn Scott, from Winlaton, helped organise the community turn-out, as well as the illumination of the Millennium Bridge. She said that although she had only know the 25-year-old a little she, like hundreds of others, had wanted to ensure his memory was honoured in a fitting way.

She said: “Everyone just wanted to come together as a community to pay our respects. We’re absolutely overwhelmed by how many people have come out. It has really hit home, because everybody pulled together to try to find him.”

The funeral cortege also passed by Jordan’s school, St Thomas More Catholic High School, so that teachers who knew Jordan could also stand and pay their respects as it drove by. Deputy head teacher Jillian Turner said: “We are saddened by the news of Jordan’s passing. He was a valued member of our school community and our thoughts and prayers are with his family at this time.”

After the procession, Jordan’s closest family and friends said goodbye to him in a ceremony at Saltwell Crematorium, although due to Covid-19 restrictions funerals can currently only be attended by a maximum of 30 people.
