LOOKING for work, but don’t fancy spending every day cooped up in an office? How about devoting your summer to protecting wildlife in one of the North East’s most beautiful spots instead?

The National Trust is now hiring for assistant rangers to work on the Farne Islands, the Northumberland coast’s famous home of puffins, terns, seals and more.

The team of assistants, alongside the two full-time rangers, help monitor the islands’ nesting bird and seal populations, carry out maintenance work and, when coronavirus restrictions allow, welcome boat trip visitors on to the Inner Farne.

According to the job advert: “The Islands are a diverse, beautiful and unique place to work, where no two days are the same.

“Travelling to the islands every day, your time will be spent monitoring the wildlife, managing the habitat and welcoming visitors to the islands when it is safe to do so.

“Working and living alongside your team, you will build close relationships with your colleagues and contribute to a strong team effort.

“You will have a variety of duties which will include habitat management, boat-based cliff counts, puffin census, gull management, visitor engagement and island maintenance.

“You will promote the work that we do and connect people to our cause, sharing your knowledge and passion to emphasise the importance of protecting the Farne Islands for the future.

“Your inspiration and dedication should encourage support and enhance people’s understanding of the significance of the Farne Islands and its wildlife.”

The pay is £17,352 per annum, and rangers live in staff accommodation for the summer alongside their colleagues.

Those interested will need to show how their skills and experience will contribute towards the assistant ranger role, and explain why they want to work on the Islands.

The job will run until the end of July, and applicants who will be staying in staff accommodation while Covid-19 restrictions are in force need to have use of their own car.
