Foundation started by bakery giant seeks chair

-

THE charitable foundation set up by Newcastle bakery chain Greggs is looking for a new chair.

The Greggs Foundation has been in operation since 1987 when it was set up by Ian Gregg, the son of the company’s founder. It exists to address poverty, hardship and inequality and is best known for its breakfast club programme.

Current chair Andrew Davison, who took over from Mr Gregg and has been in the role for more than 20 years, is stepping down from his position. The foundation is working with Newcastle recruitment specialist Drayton Partners to find his replacement.

A job advert aimed at boardlevel ‘proven leaders’ is looking for candidates used to working in high-profile roles whether in industry or the non-profit sector.

The role is a part-time one, though the advert adds there will be periods ‘that carry greater intensity and activity’.

The job advert adds: “It is so important you can demonstrate a deep, active passion for improving the lives of people in their local communities. You will have a track record of trying to make a difference, raising funds for good causes, perhaps centred upon deprived communities, food poverty, or children’s wellbeing.”

The Foundation also runs holiday clubs, health initiatives and has a rivers regeneration fund. There is also a dedicated fund to support charities in the North East, while the Foundation also has a hardship fund.

The Foundation receives 1% of Greggs’ profits each year, and brings together all of Greggs’ charitable giving.

Anyone interested in the role is asked to email rob.seery@draytonpartners.com. The closing date for applications is May 9.
