A PILOT had a lucky escape after a light aircraft he was flying crashed into a field in Northumberland.

The aeroplane was en route to Eshott Airfield when it was forced to make an emergency landing yesterday morning.

It crashed into a field near Hemelspeth Farm in Felton, prompting a rapid multi-agency emergency response.

The pilot suffered only minor head injuries.

Nobody else was injured in the crash.

Personnel at the nearby flight school have been praised for assisting with the incident and applying their expertise.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly before 10.15am we received a report that a light aircraft had been forced to make an emergency landing in a field near Hemelspeth Farm, Felton.

“Paramedics attended but thankfully the pilot did not suffer any serious injuries.”

Eshott Airfield said: “We can confirm that a private microlight aircraft has come down this morning en route to the airfield.

“We would like to thank the pilots of the flight school who helped coordinate a rapid response allowing us to get to the scene within a matter of minutes.

“We would also like to thank the local emergency services arrived incredibly quickly at the airfield to treat the pilot for minor injuries.”

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman added: “We received a call at 10.11am to reports of an incident involving a light aircraft at a farm in the Eshott area of Northumberland.”
