Big Al’s Shear disgust at drubbing

- JOSHUA HOBBS

FOLLOWING Newcastle United’s 4-0 defeat away to Leicester City, Alan Shearer took to Twitter to make his feelings known.

“#RUBBISH” was the one word verdict from the former Newcastle marksman - and considering the Magpies meek surrender in the second half it may well be one that fans will agree with.

Eddie Howe’s side had been in the game in the first half, up until a controversial penalty decision where James Maddison looked to have dived to win a penalty for a challenge by Jamaal Lascelles. Youri Tielemens then converted the penalty by lifting it high into the top left corner.

In the second half Newcastle failed to offer a threat, besides some dangerous dribbles from Allan SaintMaximin, while Leicester added three more goals through Patson Daka, Tielemens and Maddison.

In an earlier tweet, Shearer had said “Newcastle were woeful and that’s being polite.”

The second half would have been particularly concerning for Newcastle’s legendary number nine.

It again emphasised the importance of the transfer window for the

Magpies as they still look extremely leaky at the back as well as lacking in control in midfield, as Tielemens and Maddison found the game far too easy.

Following last weekend’s victory and clean sheet against Burnley, the manner of the defeat against Leicester was a particularly deflating one as there was a hope the long awaited first victory of the season would bring an upturn in the Magpies form and results.

Shearer and Newcastle fans will be hoping for a much improved performance when their side face Liverpool on Thursday night.
