FROM JANUARY 1, 2022, BUSINESSES MAY NEED TO PRE-NOTIFY ANY IMPORTS OF FOOD, PLANTS AND ANIMAL PRODUCTS FROM THE EU

-

Following the UK’s departure from the EU, there are new rules for moving goods into Great Britain. If your business imports animal or plant products from the EU into GB, you need to know how to keep your business moving.

On January 1, 2022, new rules around importing goods begin. These affect businesses across Great Britain who import from the EU. Check whether this applies to you, and act now to ensure your business is ready.

Q My business sells or buys animal or plant products from the EU. What’s changing?

A If you import food, animal products, plants or plant products from the EU, you may need to pre-notify these imports. This means that you must pre-notify the authorities that your consignment is entering Great Britain. You’ll need to register for the relevant IT system now to ensure you are prepared for the prenotification requirements from January 1, 2022.

Q What goods are included?

A The new requirements cover the import of some sanitary and phytosanitary goods, including meat or plants, coming into Great Britain from the EU. Most products of animal origin, animal byproducts, high-risk food not of animal origin, and regulated plants and plant products will require prenotification if being brought into Great Britain from the EU.

Q How do I prenotify authorities of a consignment of animal or plant products?

A You can submit prenotifications via the Import of Products, Animals, Food and Feed (IPAFFS) and PEACH IT systems.

Q Where can I find support?

A As the UK builds its new relationship with the EU, the Government is providing plenty of support for businesses while they get used to the new rules and processes. There’s lots of helpful advice on gov.uk/brexit.
